In 1824, Pennsylvania's statelegislature authorized and funded the canal construction as part of the broad sweeping commercial initiative called the Main Line of Public Works a forward looking project designing to connect Philadelphia to Pittsburgh by canals and river navigations which projects would continue to allow Philadelphia to challenge New York City (and its Erie Canal) for emerging mid-western markets beyond the Allegheny Mountains.

Middletown was founded in 1755 along the left bank of the Susquehanna River and was incorporated as a borough in 1828 after a sudden boom in development and population occurred as a result of the construction of the Union Canal, connecting Lancaster to Middletown. It is part of the Harrisburg– Carlisle Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 9,550. The bridge between two iconic cities was finally built as Two Cities Pizza Company was born.Middletown is a borough in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, on the Susquehanna River, 10 miles (16 km) southeast of Harrisburg. When seeking the best style of pizza, the founders arrived at two. Zach and Sean realized that choosing one city over the other would not truly represent the American pizza tradition. In this case, the “problem” actually proved to be the solution. Zach and Sean had narrowed their focus to two styles of pizza, that just so happen to be opposite in composition: New York and Chicago style pizzas. The first and most consequential “problem” arose on that summer break. There are so many styles of pizza in the world, but the founders knew that only the best style would ultimately become the focal point of their future menu. On a college summer break, Zach and Sean got to work. Creating the best pizza, and brand to showcase it was the mission. There are countless combinations of flavors between dough, sauce, and toppings. Their life-long friendship, and shared love of creativity and food ultimately made Two Cities a reality. Sean Spurlock and Zach Greves founded Two Cities Pizza Company in 2015 when they were twenty-two years old.
